Student Life
Sci High celebrates diversity, individuality, and student choice. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the culture of our students, our focus on initiatives that support our mission, and our extracurricular activities. Students have opportunities to create their own extracurriculars, or to join any number of both traditional and non-traditional offerings. While we have typical high school events like basketball games and a junior/senior prom, we also have our own unique traditions like the senior camping trip, the “Passing of the Nautilus” ceremony, and the Rising Stars College trips.
STEM Focus
Many programs outside the classroom enrich students’ knowledge of and experience in the science, technology, math and engineering areas. Summer internships immerse students in actual workplaces, including scientific settings. Classes include real-world projects such as investigating chemical profiles of lagoon water at Audubon Park in Environmental Science and analyzing real-world data in AP Statistics. Students participate in science fairs at Sci High and the Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering fair. And Sci High scholars take part in educational extracurricular activities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, & math) fields that include mentoring opportunities, job shadowing, and field trips. Special events throughout the school year, including an Industry Lunch Series and a Majors Fair, expose Sci High students to diverse careers and majors, and help them develop their networking skills. There were field trips to London and Paris last year, and a service-learning trip to Peru is planned for Spanish II students this spring.
