College Trips & Recruitment Events

To make the transition from high school to college (or other post-secondary accomplishments) as seamless as possible, Sci High offers many programs to excite our students about college and help them get there. More than 70% of Sci High students are the first in their families to attend college.

College Trips

All students are part of organized visits to local, regional and national college campuses, beginning in the freshman year. Throughout their time at Sci High, students have the opportunity to visit local colleges and universities including:
  • Xavier
  • Loyola
  • Southeastern Louisiana University
  • Dillard
  • McNeese
  • Nicholls
  • University of South Alabama
  • University of Southern Mississippi
  • Dillard
  • University of New Orleans
  • Southern University of New Orleans

Senior “rising stars” chosen on the basis of excellence in academics and leadership, traveled to New York for first-hand experience on the campuses of Bard, Columbia and New York University in the fall. A spring “rising stars” trip for 10th and 11th graders focused on Boston, where students stayed on the Harvard University campus and also visited MIT, Boston University, Northeastern University and Tufts, among others. The “rising stars” program is funded by grants.

Recruitment Events

Sci High students have many opportunities every year to meet representatives of colleges from around the nation.

For example, students visited the National College Fair, which featured colleges from all across the United States.

Students are also invited to attend a lunch at Sci High with various College Admissions Representatives. The Sci High guidance counselling department has hosted representatives from universities including:

  • Bard College (NY)
  • Carnegie Mellon University (PA)
  • Dartmouth College (NH)
  • Franklin & Marshall College (PA)
  • Loyola University (LA)
  • Louisiana State University (LA)
  • Soka University (CA)

ACT Prep

To help Sci High students get ready for the ACT (as well as other college admission tests), the school offers free practice tests several times a year, as well as a workshop emphasizing successful test-taking strategies and techniques.

Sci High students also can apply to participate in free preparatory courses for the ACT and SAT to prepare to take these standardized tests for the first time, or to increase score and ensure TOPS eligibility.
