Pathways to Success

Academics at Sci High are aligned on a single philosophy: all students can learn at high levels.

Our curriculum includes nine Advanced Placement classes in math, science, English, and social studies, all of which are open to any interested students who have passed the prerequisites. Multiple Sci High students have been selected to participate in the highly selective Bard Early College Program, spending the mornings in Sci High classes and the afternoons in college-level courses taught by local faculty.  The courses also offer college credit from Bard.  Sci High students are also take advantage of dual enrollment at Tulane, Xavier, Delgado, Bard, and NOCCA.

STEM Focus

Many programs outside the classroom enrich students’ knowledge of and experience in the science, technology, math and engineering areas. Summer internships immerse students in actual workplaces, including scientific settings. Classes include real-world projects such as investigating chemical profiles of lagoon water at Audubon Park in Environmental Science and analyzing real-world data in AP Probability & Statistics. Students participate in science fairs at Sci High and the Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering fair. Sci High students take part in educational extracurricular activities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, & math) fields that include mentoring opportunities, job shadowing, and field trips. Special events throughout the school year, including an Industry Lunch Series and a Majors Fair, expose Sci High students to diverse careers and majors, and help them develop their networking skills.

Project Lead the Way (PLTW)

Sci High began implementation of the PLTW Engineering, Biomedical Science, and Computer Science Pathways in the 2015-2016 school year and is currently the ONLY school that offers all three pathways! From the PLTW website: "When students understand how STEM education is relevant to their lives and future careers, they get excited.  Project Lead The Way provides a comprehensive approach to STEM Education.  Through activity-, project-, and problem-based curriculum, PLTW gives students a chance to apply what they know, identify problems, find unique solutions, and lead their own learning."

 Advanced Placement (AP)
The curriculum includes Advanced Placement classes in math, science, English, and social studies, all of which are open to any interested students who have passed the prerequisites.  The goal: every student will experience at least one AP class during four years at Sci High, and, on average, the current senior class is exceeding that expectation.  Of 105 seniors, 78% are taking at least one AP class, and 55% will graduate with two or more AP credits.  The results of the Sci High AP program are the best of any of the open-admission schools in Orleans Parish.
